Development

After two years of defeat, Admiral Marcus Ramirez's first goal was to leapfrog Klingon technology with a new class of combat vessel. The Ares-class — referred to in Prelude as the "Aries class" — was exactly what Starfleet needed: the first pure warship the service had ever built.

Over a dozen Federation member worlds contributed to the program. Andorian yards supplied phasers; Vulcan participation focused on propulsion, environmental, and defensive systems.

Combat Record

Operation Pegasus at Signis III was the Ares-class trial by fire against the D6 battlecruiser it was designed to defeat. Simulations looked good — but as Ramirez's captains knew, the only true test for a combat vessel is combat.

After Signis III, Klingon commanders began treating Starfleet as a worthy adversary. Captain Garth of Izar, Captain Sonya Alexander, and Admiral Samuel Travis commanded frontline Ares-class hulls through the war's turning engagements.

  • Bigger, faster, and more agile than prior Federation designs
  • Better armed than anything Starfleet had fielded before the war
  • Prototype U.S.S. Ares (NCC-1650) — hero ship of Prelude and Axanar
  • Sister ships include U.S.S. Ajax (NCC-1652) and U.S.S. Hercules (NCC-1657)

Design Philosophy

The Ares-class represents wartime specialization — a deliberate break from Starfleet's exploratory roots toward a vessel built solely to win fleet engagements. Lessons from these hulls informed the later Constitution-class multi-role heavy cruiser.
